I had such a great weekend with an amazing team building an MVP for Totally Radish at Hack the Gap. Our hack even won 2nd place!
Totally Radish was an idea that formed around a need one of our teammates faced. She recently became vegan and was feeling overwhelmed by the constant need to check ingredient labels. Furthermore, she didn't know what to do when she was given a snack size food item that didn't list ingredients at all. So we created an app that allows users to simply take a photo of a product label to determine whether the product is vegan. The app does all the work of recognizing the text on the label, matching it to a product in a database, pulling the product ingredients, and cross-referencing those ingredients against a list of non-vegan ingredients. The application was built with the ability to expand to any number of restricted diets.
I want to thank my team and give a shout out to their awesome skills: Kim Mai, Liz Haakenson, Emma Stout, Levy Kohout, and Maham Khan Maus.
And another thank you to Kristen Womack and Jenna Pederson for bringing Hack the Gap to life! Hack the Gap has been around since 2013, and I actually attended that very first event. It was (and is) such an inspiring event for women in tech.
I’m still feeling incredibly inspired after seeing so many driven and talented ladies in one place. I can't wait until next year!
